How code 95 training can benefit your trucking business

Great truck drivers are the core of all profitable truck companies. Developing your drivers with training is essential to increasing productivity, lowering costs and increasing your profits. In this article, I look at how you can make the most of mandatory code 95 training to help your truck drivers become better drivers. I also give an example from one of my training sessions in Holland to show how much money it is possible to save each year thanks to a training course in fuel-efficient driving.

What is code 95?

The primary purpose of code 95 training is to make European roads safer by increasing drivers’ awareness of risks and enable them to drive in a way that reduces them. One of the benefits of the legislation is the possibility of raising standards in the industry and improving the image of the driving profession.

In Holland, we use code 95 training to offer very practical based courses and I firmly believe that is the best way to change driving habits.

All truck drivers in the European Union (EU) are required by law to have the code 95 indication on their driving license. This indication means a truck driver has taken part in 35 hours training during a five-year period and is shown on a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) card.

The exact content of the training is dependent on which EU country you are in. In Holland for instance, we are required to have a practical course for 7 hours within the mandated 35 hour training.

In general though, the options available include:

  • Laws and legislation covering working hours, tachograph legislation and more
  • Safe driving techniques
  • Driver safety
  • Fuel-efficient driving techniques
  • Driver lifestyle tips to stay fit and healthy on the road

How much money can your truck business save with quality training?

At Volvo Trucks in Holland, we’re able to show the cost-saving you could potentially enjoy each year thanks to a training session in fuel-efficient driving and adopting these principles for the rest of the year. Below, I have included an example from one of our training sessions.

In this session, like many others that I have given, we started the day with the driver driving the way he or she is used to. Measurements were taken for petrol used, idling time, rolling time, CO2 emissions, and braking. The driver then went through a theoretical course for a few hours and drove the same route in the afternoon using the tips and advice from the morning session. The figures below show how these figures changed in the second session. They also indicate how much money could be saved each year if drivers followed this advice every day.
